Clarksville, City Or Town

A southern Indiana town that traces its roots to the Northwest Territory is weighing whether it needs to become a city with a full-time government.

The town of Clarksville near Louisville, Ky., has grown so much since it was established in 1783 that leaders say they are straining to meet the demands with a part-time government.

Town Board President John Gilkey tells the Courier-Journal in Louisville (http://cjky.it/R0nm4s ) a committee is being formed to get residents' input on whether to become a city.

Indiana currently has 449 towns and 119 cities.

The town-city debate isn't unique to Clarksville. Voters in the town of Fishers northeast of Indianapolis will decide whether to become a city during a November referendum.

Gilkey says a Clarksville referendum could be held in 2014.
