A crackdown on underage and binge drinking at six college campuses is leading to more arrests and a new atmosphere at tailgate parties across Indiana.
The Indianapolis Star reports that Indiana Excise Police are targeting Ball State, Indiana State, Notre Dame, Purdue, Butler and Indiana universities this fall as part of their Intensified College Enforcement program.
Corporal Travis Thickstun says the goal is to change student behaviors related to alcohol consumption. Studies show about 1,700 college students died last year from excessive drinking.
Students say the efforts have tamed down some of the pre-game festivities. IU now bans music at tailgating and has increased the police presence before games.
