Layoff's Coming to Hammond

A northwest Indiana company that makes heavy industrial springs for equipment including railroad cars has informed the state Department of Workforce Development it plans to permanently lay off 94 employees starting in December.

The Times of Munster reports Amsted Rail sent the notice on Monday, saying the layoffs were the result of "unforeseeable business circumstances".

Under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, employers of companies with 100 workers or more are required to provide notice 60 days in advance of a plant closing or mass layoffs.

The layoffs are expected to start as soon as December 17th.

The company received a 10-year property tax abatement from Hammond earlier this year for a $7.7 million facility renovation.
