A bill to ban Indiana teacher union deductions, advances...

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Indiana public schools would be prohibited from handling paycheck deductions for teachers union dues under a proposal endorsed by a Republican-led legislative committee.

The president of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and an aide to Gov. Mike Pence both spoke in favor of the dues collection ban Tuesday before the House education committee voted along party lines to advance the bill.

Republican Rep. Jeff Thompson of Linton says he sponsored the ban because he doesn't believe a governmental unit should be involved in collecting union dues.

Several teachers union leaders said they regarded the move as an attack on teachers that takes away an option for control of their own paychecks.

Democratic Rep. Kreg Battles of Vincennes says the paycheck deductions are a common courtesy that cost school districts nothing.
