Indiana State Excise Police Release Drinking Report

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Alcohol-related car crashes among 15- to 20-year-olds are down around six Indiana college campuses, but arrests related to underage alcohol violations have risen from 2011 to 2012.

The Indiana State Excise Police recently released a report showing a 56 percent drop in alcohol-related crashes involving younger drivers in six Indiana counties home to large college campuses. Arrests of minors for possession and consumption, however, rose 37 percent from 2011 to 2012 and arrests for providing alcohol to minors rose 46 percent.

Cpl. Travis Thickstun of the State Excise Police told WISH-TV the agency has been successful in reducing the number of young people injured in alcohol-related crashes. He also said he hopes higher arrest numbers send a message to underage drinkers.
