Crane workers protest budget cuts, furloughs...
CRANE, Ind. (AP) _ Workers at the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center in southern Indiana are protesting automatic federal budget cuts that union leaders say will cost them 20 percent of their pay.
The Washington Times-Herald reports about 30 workers holding signs reading ``Stop Furloughs'' and ``Stop Pay Freeze'' gathered outside the base Friday to oppose the cuts known as the sequester.
Crane will lose about $36 million in the federal cuts. Many of the base's civilian employees will be furloughed one day a week starting in April.
American Federation of Government Employees Local 1415 president Jimmy Colvin says the cuts will be ``devastating'' to workers and will hurt the local economy.
The cuts at Crane are part of $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts designed to shrink the federal deficit.
