INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ A bill that would have expanded mass transit in central Indiana has been sidetracked by a state Senate panel.
The Indianapolis Star and Indianapolis Business Journal report the Senate Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee voted 12-0 Tuesday to shift the legislation to a summer study committee.
The bill would have allowed central Indiana voters to vote on higher income taxes to pay for the proposed 10-year, $1.3 billion project. The expansion would double bus service in Indianapolis and add a rail line or bus service between downtown Indianapolis and Noblesville, about 20 miles to the north.
The bill passed the House but ran headlong into Republican opposition in the Senate. Republican Appropriations Committee Chairman Luke Kenley of Noblesville dropped his sponsorship of the bill last month.
