ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) _ The union representing Anderson firefighters says it's displeased by a decision to close a fire station and relocate one of the department's busiest rescue trucks.

International Association of Firefighters Local 1262 president Cody Leever tells The Herald-Bulletin that closing Station 3 and moving its heavy rescue truck to the department's downtown headquarters will cost residents their ``first due response.''

The station has been a neighborhood anchor since it opened in 1978. But budget shortfalls and staffing issues had put its survival in question. The station narrowly avoided being closed last fall.

The layoffs of eight firefighters in January and other staffing issues have made the situation more difficult.

Fire Chief Philip Rogers says the department has already spent 75 percent of its 2013 overtime budget.
