PERU, Ind. (AP) _ Unpaid furlough days caused by automatic federal budget cuts are starting for more than 470 civilian employees at northern Indiana's Grissom Air Reserve Base.

Military officials say the workers have to take 11 furlough days between Monday and the Sept. 30 end of the federal budget year.

Lt. Col. Gary Lockard tells the Kokomo Tribune that most workers will be furloughed for one day each week, but those days will vary based on the mission needs at the base about 50 miles north of Indianapolis. The furloughs are estimated to cost Grissom workers an average of more than $3,100.

Grissom is home to the 434th Air Refueling Wing, which flies KC-135 Stratotankers.

Similar furloughs are coming for nearly 4,000 workers at Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center in southern Indiana.
