LAPORTE, Ind. (AP) _ A 16-year-old who brought an explosive device to a northern Indiana county fair for the thrill of seeing people's reaction won't face adult charges.
LaPorte County Prosecutor Robert Szilagyi says possession of a handgun would automatically move a juvenile into adult court, but possession of explosives does not.
The teenager who carried the device and another who interfered with sheriff's deputies were arrested July 1 at the LaPorte County Fair, about 25 miles west of South Bend. A police bomb squad dismantled the device. The teen charged with making the bomb was arrested the following day.
Szilagyi tells The LaPorte County Herald-Argus if the teens had tried to detonate the device, they could be tried as adults.
He wants people to urge state legislators to change the law.
