WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - City officials are planning to install four monitoring video cameras in a commercial area near the Purdue University campus.

West Lafayette economic development director Chandler Poole says the main purpose of the cameras is to let planners observe pedestrian and vehicular traffic along the State Street corridor.

The Journal & Courier reports the city will spend about $18,000 on the camera system. That comes as the city is looking to revamp the street since it no longer is part of the state highway system after the opening of the new West Lafayette bypass.

City Police Chief Jason Dombkowski says the department will also monitor the cameras, although the area has little crime. He says they'll be his department's first cameras, while the Purdue campus has nearly 200 cameras.
