SELLERSBURG, Ind. (AP) _ A southern Indiana town has declared a state of emergency because of the winter storm.

Sellersburg Police Chief Russ Whelan tells WDRB-TV the weather had rapidly deteriorated Tuesday, making roads dangerous in the town about 10 miles north of Louisville, Ky.

Police are urging Sellersburg residents to stay home and keep the roads clear for emergency crews.

Before the storm arrived, several school districts in surrounding Clark County dismissed students two hours early.

The National Weather Service has posted a winter storm warning for region through 7 a.m. Wednesday. It says a significant accumulation of freezing rain and ice was possible.
