FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): IPFW started a ban yesterday that snuffs out smoking and tobacco use on campus, it’s generally being received well, but some students have their doubts.
Natala Milspah is a student who brings her young son to campus. She likes what the idea, but doubts its effectiveness. She’s concerned about the negative impact.
“I don’t think people are going to stop smoking. Now, I think I am going to run into it a lot more in the parking lots.”
Others questioned banning e-cigarettes, claiming they aren't harmful. Some said the university was doing it to look good, without a real commitment to truly being a healthy campus.
David Eigsti is a smoker. He says the mid-semester timing was awkward. August 1st would have been just as effective as April 1. He speculates there were financial benefits to move so quickly.
But the real issue, he says doesn’t combat the real issue. He says there's nothing to help smokers get healthy.
“All I see...stickers on windows and doors saying IPFW is a smoke free campus with little smiley faces.”
University officials say there was no financial incentive involved and was made to make our campus a healthier place and there was no reason to wait until summer.
The new policy bans cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, electronic cigarettes and all other tobacco products will be prohibited on campus and other sites owned or controlled by the university.
