HANOVER, Ind. (AP): Actor Woody Harrelson's southern Indiana alma mater has honored him for his decades of work on stage and screen and his advocacy work.

Harrelson received the honorary doctor of humane letters degree from Hanover College during a ceremony Saturday.

Harrelson graduated from Hanover in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in English. He soon endeared himself to television audiences by portraying dim but loveable bartender Woody Boyd on "Cheers."

Harrelson has appeared in nearly 60 movies, including "The People vs. Larry Flynt," "No Country for Old Men," "Zombieland" and "The Hunger Games." He appeared this year in the HBO series "True Detective."

He's also advocated for social justice and the environment.

Hanover College overlooks the Ohio River about 40 miles northeast of Louisville, Ky.
