INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Gov. Mike Pence wants U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan to support the state's request for a waiver from the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

Pence wrote in a letter to Duncan Friday that the state is planning a new test that should meet federal requirements. Schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz is crafting the proposal and is expected to submit it by the end of the month.

The U.S. Department of Education warned the state in April that it could lose its federal waiver because of school-monitoring concerns.

Conservative state lawmakers led a drive earlier this year to remove Indiana from the national Common Core education standards. Education leaders crafted new education standards in their place, but critics have noted their similarity to the Common Core standards.
