Two Indiana universities are on the list of most dangerous college campuses…
(Network Indiana) - The list of the 25 Most Dangerous Colleges from BusinessInsider.com ranks Ball State University 11th and Indiana State University 12th. Gus Lubin of Business Insider says the list ranked colleges with student enrollments of 10-thousand or more by the number of crimes committed on or near campus, as reported by the FBI.
Ball State was among the schools on the list that complained that data on crimes committed against students off campus should not have been used. Spokeswoman Joan Todd says that when you limit reports of crime to what takes place on campus, Ball State falls off the list completely. "Ball State University has the state’s first accredited - and re-accredited - university police department.
Our crime statistics are published online for the geographic area that our police department covers," said Todd. Lubin says he doesn‘t understand the complaint, saying that when parents look to send their kids to college, they are likely to want the entire area around a school to be safe, not just the campus itself.
"We used this list because it provides a comprehensive look at crime on campus and in related non campus areas." That said, Lubin admits there were problems with the original list, since not all schools participate and some schools are more aggressive than others in reporting crimes that occur on non campus areas.
As Todd alludes, Business Insider ran a second list based on crimes that took place exclusively on campus. While there were some similarities to the original list, both Ball State and Indiana State are not on the second list.
