GOP Worries Derailed Turner Post Created by kblakeslee on 4/24/2013 4:59:29 PM
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ State lawmakers say a top-ranking Indiana Republican who has drawn scrutiny for possible conflicts of interest lost his bid to write the state budget because of his family's lobbying ties.
The lawmakers told The Associated Press that House Speaker Pro Tem Eric Turner was bypassed for Ways and Means chairman because of his work as a fireworks lobbyist and his daughter's work representing clients at the Statehouse. They say House Speaker Brian Bosma was worried about the appearance of impropriety.
The lawmakers spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss private conversations.
Bosma has said he will review House ethics rules following the session. Turner wasn't immediately available for comment Wednesday.
Lawmakers are poised to pass a $30 billion budget this week.
