INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Indiana's unemployment rate has dropped to 6.9 percent, reaching its lowest level in more than five years.

Figures released Tuesday by the state Department of Workforce Development show the rate for December is the state's lowest since October 2008 when many job cuts were taking place as the recession deepened.

Indiana's unemployment rate is slightly higher than the national rate of 6.7 percent. The new report shows nearly 220,000 people were looking for jobs last month in Indiana.

In Allen County the rate dropped from 6.9 to 6.0, LaGrange saw the largest drop, from 6.4 percent to 5.3 Grant county is at 7.3 percent, down from 8.4 percent.

Critics say the numbers aren’t accurate because only counts those looking for work, not the entire jobless population, including those who gave up looking.
