FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): An Air National Guard base in Fort Wayne could soon host the next generation of fighter jets.

Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly said in a press release issued earlier this week that Fort Wayne is one of 18 bases nationwide competing for a mission with F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jets.

The Air Force will pick two bases this fall for the mission.

Donnelly says Fort Wayne’s base is “ideally suited” to take on the mission due to the 122nd Fighter Wing’s reputation for superior performance.

If chosen, the base will get the jets in 2022.
