Proposal would allow guns in Fort Wayne parks

(Kayla Blakeslee/WOWO News )

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): One Fort Wayne Councilman is proposing an ordinance that would allow people to carry guns in city parks.

Republican Jason Arp has proposed an amendment to the city code that removes firearms from a list of items that are prohibited from city parks, including fireworks, BB guns, and paintball guns.

Arp says the city’s current ordinance violates a state law that prohibits cities from regulating guns.

This is being incorrectly reported by your and other news outlets in Fort Wayne. The city ordinance contradicts state law. It is not an attempt to now allow legal firearms in city parks, it is an effort to insure that the city of Fort Wayne does not end up in court trying to enforce an ordinance that is over-ruled by state law. This has already happened in other cities in Indiana.

Hey Mark –

I do believe we covered that in the following report and we ran several stories on air with him saying that Fort Wayne is out of compliance with the state law.
