Commission Sets Schedule for Picking Chief Justice

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): The commission that will pick Indiana's next Supreme Court chief justice will hear from all four justices before making its selection.

The Judicial Nominating Commission has announced the schedule, saying it will hear from Justices Loretta Rush, Mark Massa, Steven David and Robert Rucker on Aug 6. The commission has asked the justices to speak about the qualities and attributes important in a chief justice.

Two years ago, the justices all recommended Brent Dickson be named chief justice and the commission followed their recommendation. Dickson announced earlier this year he would be stepping down as chief justice but would stay on as an associate justice.

After hearing from the justices in public, the commission will meet privately to select the next chief justice for a five-year term.
