City council to vote on chicken ownership in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) – City Councilman Jason Arp spoke with WOWO Tuesday morning about keeping chickens within city limits.

Tonight City Council members will discuss the ordinance on whether Fort Wayne inhabitants can keep chickens on their property.

If the ordinance is passed, property owners would be allowed a maximum of five hens, but no roosters. This ordinance was modeled after the order that passed unanimously in Valparaiso last year.

Coups will not be allowed within 10 feet of the property, or 20 feet of a dwelling.

Neighborhood and homeowners associations would still be allowed to ban the ownership of chickens, no matter the ordinance outcome.

Tonight, the City Council committee will vote. If it passes, the ordinance will have a final vote next week.
