Elkhart school officials warn of elevated lead levels

ELKHART, Ind. (WOWO): Students and staff at Elkhart Community Schools will have to stick to bottled water when they return to school this week.

That’s because elevated lead levels were found in either the backflow preventers or kitchen sinks at six district buildings, including two elementary schools and Elkhart Memorial High School, according to a letter posted on the district’s Facebook page.

District officials say the probability of lead actually reaching the drinking water supply is low, but they’re still taking what they call an “extreme safety precaution” in this case.

Our sister station, 95.3 MNC, reports that high lead levels were not found in drinking fountains or restroom sinks.
