Holiday Shopping Safety Tips

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The busy holiday shopping season is upon us. As Hoosiers head to the malls and local stores, criminals are on the lookout for easy targets. Being a victim of a crime is no Christmas present. Therefore, the Indiana State Police Department is offering shoppers a few tips to make them less vulnerable to a criminal seeking an easy theft.


Before Shopping


 Carry small amounts of cash.

 Carry keys, credit cards and cash separate from each other.</p>

 Wear conservative, comfortable clothing with minimal jewelry.

 If you have access to a cell phone, carry it.

 While driving, keep your doors locked and windows up.

While Shopping


 If you carry a purse, keep it close to your body and always have it zipped.

 Park in a well lit area close to where you plan to shop.

 Always be aware of your surroundings.

 Hold packages firmly and avoid leaving them unattended.

 Keep personal belongings and purchased items out of view when left in your vehicle.

 Never leave children unattended while shopping.


After Shopping


 Leave the stores before closing time; it is safer to leave with other people.

 Check the interior of your car before entering.

 When returning to your vehicle, carry your keys in your hand and be ready to enter your vehicle immediately.
