FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) _ Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller is proposing a new bill to protect deployed military members and their families.
The proposed Indiana Service Member's Civil Relief Act was announced Thursday. The bill would increase consumer protections, including the suspension of postponement of debt collections, foreclosures, cellphone contracts and court hearings, to service members while they are deployed.
Zoeller says the bill would protect members of the military while they're protecting Americans during deployment.
Rep. Dennis Zent and Rep. Martin Carbaugh are also supporting the bill, which is an expansion of an existing federal version.
Zent says Indiana lawmakers will work with four other states, which are working on their own versions, to determine the best way to format and enforce the bill.
