UPDATE: Student killed in U.S. 31 bus crash identified

MARSHALL COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO) – Police confirm one student was killed when a semi and bus collided on U.S. 31 between Argos and Plymouth Wednesday morning.

Indiana State Troopers and Marshall County Deputies were called to the scene just after 9 a.m.

38 students were on the bus at the time of the crash, which happened near the railroad tracks. A preliminary investigation indicates the bus had just stopped, as required by law, and as it began to accelerate it was struck from behind by a semi.

One student was killed on impact. Additional injuries were reported, but are believed to be non-life-threatening at this time. One student was airlifted to the hospital.

WNDU reports the students were from Winamac Community Middle School and were heading to the Wagon Wheel Theatre in Warsaw.

Toxicology results are pending for both drivers and the crash is still under investigation.

The Marshall County Coroner later identified the victim as Owen Abbot, 13 of Winamac, Ind.
