FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) _ Indiana hospitals that treat high numbers of poor and uninsured residents are waiting to see what impact the federal health care overhaul has on them.

The law will give more people access to insurance when it takes effect Jan. 1. But hospitals say uncertainty over whether Indiana will expand Medicaid services makes it hard to know what to expect.

Hospital officials say some of the law’s changes could boost their incomes but note that safety net hospitals also will bear the brunt of $30 billion in cuts over the next decade.

CEO Eric Looper of St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne tells The Journal Gazette that trying to figure out the law’s impact on the bottom line is a “moving target.”
