UPDATE: Bisard Sentenced to 16 Years in Jail

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) – A former Indianapolis police officer convicted of driving drunk and causing a crash that killed a motorcyclist and seriously injuring two others was sentenced to 13 years in prison on Tuesday.

Allen Superior Judge John Surbeck sentenced David Bisard to a total of 16 years in prison, but suspended the last three years. Bisard resigned Monday from the police department. He was convicted last month on nine counts, the most serious of which was driving with a blood-alcohol content above 0.15 percent while in a fatal accident.

The Indianapolis Star reports that Bisard told the court that he is “remorseful beyond words” and accepts responsibility for the crash. But he said he would not accept responsibility for being intoxicated “because I wasn't.”
