FWPD Arrests Driver Accused of Killing Pedestrian During Chase

FORT WAYNE, IND. (WOWO) Fort Wayne Police have arrested 30-year-old Denzel Trevon Gordon on a slate of felony charges after a fleeing incident Thursday morning that left a pedestrian dead at the intersection of Spy Run Boulevard and East Fourth Street.

Police say the pursuit began around 6:02 a.m., when an officer attempted a traffic stop near Lawton Place and Griswold Drive. Gordon allegedly refused to stop, circling the neighborhood as officers attempted to contain him.

At 6:08 a.m., investigators say Gordon was driving east on East Fourth Street when he attempted to turn north onto Spy Run Avenue and struck an adult male pedestrian. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity will be released by the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

Despite the fatal crash, Gordon continued northbound, sideswiping another vehicle just beyond the intersection. The female driver of that vehicle was not injured.

Police say Gordon finally stopped in the 1400 block of Spy Run Avenue, exited the vehicle, and ran on foot. Officers say he was seen throwing a handgun into nearby grass as he fled. Multiple witnesses called 911 with information, allowing officers to track him to a backyard in the same block, where he was taken into custody without further incident. The discarded handgun was recovered.

Gordon, who was not injured, is now facing the following preliminary charges:

  • Resisting Law Enforcement – Vehicle Causing Death, Level 3 Felony

  • Leaving the Scene of an Accident Causing Death, Level 4 Felony

  • Reckless Homicide, Level 5 Felony

  • Unlicensed Driver Causing Death, Level 5 Felony

  • Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Level 5 Felony

  • Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon, Level 6 Felony

  • Resisting Law Enforcement – Foot, A Misdemeanor

  • Leaving the Scene of an Accident – Occupied Vehicle, B Misdemeanor

Spy Run Avenue remained closed between East Superior and East Fourth as investigators processed the scene. The case remains under active investigation.
