No Criminal Charges in Police-Action Shooting

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): No criminal charges will be filed in the police-action shooting that resulted in the death of Tavontae Haney.

The Office of the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney completed their review of this case and determined that law enforcement was justified in using deadly force, in which the Fort Wayne Police Department officers fired in self defense.

The shooting happened on April 27th, 2013, on Spatz Avenue. Haney was the front seat passenger in car that was being chased by police, when the driver didn't stop at a stop sign.

When the driver pulled over, Haney exited the car and several witness said he had a gun. Officers pursued Haney and ordered him to drop his weapon twice, but witness say Haney failed to do so and began to aim his gun towards officers, at which time he was shot by the police and pronounced dead on the scene.
