INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Some Indiana lawmakers are worried that stagnant pay for State Police troopers could hurt the agency by prompting more officers to seek higher-paying jobs at other departments.

State troopers receive annual experience raises until they've served 20 years with the State Police. But a 2 percent increase to their base pay this summer will be the first in seven years.

State Sen. Jim Arnold of LaPorte says the first-year salary of about $38,000 for troopers leaves the agency at risk of having troopers hired away by better-paying agencies.

Legislative leaders have agreed to have the State Budget Committee review pay scales with other police agencies and determine whether the salary issue has caused higher turnover rates.
