FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Stopped trains is becoming an issue of public safety in some northeast Indiana counties.
That's according to to the Journal Gazette, who reports a local push is underway to try to get big-time railroad companies to take notice.
Various railroad crossings in Allen, DeKalb, and Wells Counties have seen trains stop on the tracks and block traffic for extended periods of time.
A ticket is issued when trains block railroad crossings for more than 10 minutes- an incident that can result in up to a $500 fine.
In Allen County, stopped Norfolk Southern trains in the city of New Haven have landed 18 tickets for the company. In Wells County, the company had 63 tickets.
The Journal Gazette reports the mayor's office in Auburn has been talking with CSX and Norfolk Southern to reach a solution.
