Campground Becomes Summer Haven for the Homeless

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — A Terre Haute park's campground has become a haven this summer for a group of people who've lost their homes even though it isn't intended for long-term campers.

The Tribune-Star reports Vigo County's Park Board plans to discuss the presence of the long-term campers at Hawthorn Park during an upcoming meeting.

Many of the campers are living in tents or trailers and say they are glad to have a low-cost place to stay during the summer. Some hope to have permanent housing by the time the park closes for the season in October.

Advocates from a local group called Families by Choice is helping campers by delivering food to help the campers stretch their meals.
