Pence’s Pivot to the Middle Angers Far-Right Base

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Indiana Governor Mike Pence is angering the staunch conservatives who courted him for the White House in 2012 as he positions himself for a possible presidential run in 2016.

Pence's decision to seek an alternative expansion of Medicaid and his recrafting of Common Core education standards has drawn protests from tea partyers in recent months. Common Core protesters showed up to Pence's appearance at an Americans For Prosperity event in Dallas, Texas last month.

Conservative pundit and blogger Joy Pullman says activists are worried Pence may be positioning himself as a “RINO,'' or Republican in Name Only, to seek the White House.

Pence argues that his moves are designed to promote conservative ideas. He has been mum about whether he will seek the GOP nomination.
