Lafayette Social Services Cuts Force Tough Choices

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP): Lafayette social services agencies say funding cuts have forced them to make choices that have limited who they can help.

The city receives two types of funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. HOME funds and Community Development and Building Grants must be used to improve low- to moderate-income areas and to coordinate with social service agencies.

Lafayette has lost more than 18 percent of its community development grants and more than 23 percent of its HOME funds in the last three years.

Community development director Aimee Jacobsen tells the Journal & Courier the cuts have led to difficult decisions.
The city has still managed to surpass some of the goals in a 2010 plan to address the needs of its homeless population.
