Norfolk Southern Cited for Blocking Intersection

DUNLAP, Ind. (AP) — Norfolk Southern faces 18 citations and possible fines after one of its trains snarled traffic by blocking a northern Indiana intersection for more than three hours.

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department says a citizen called police Wednesday to report a train was blocking a U.S. 33 intersection in the town of Dunlap about five miles south of Elkhart.

Deputies issued 18 citations to Norfolk Southern for violating a state law that says trains can't block a railroad crossing for more than 10 minutes, unless they have no control over the situation.

The Elkhart Truth reports the citations could lead to up to $9,000 in fines against Norfolk Southern.

Sheriff Brad Rogers says Dunlap's residents “are just at their wits' ends over this and I can empathize with them.”
