INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Lawmakers are returning to the Indiana Statehouse for the start of their four-month, budget-writing session.

Main topics expected to be up for debate during the session starting Tuesday include changing the school-funding system because less money per student goes to fast-growing suburban districts than urban districts with high levels of poverty.

Projections for moderate state tax revenue growth could make it tough for advocates of increased road funding for local governments and reversing spending cuts ordered by Gov. Mike Pence to the Department of Child Services and other agencies.

Also hovering over the session will be Pence possibly positioning himself to enter the Republican presidential race and whether more hot-button social issues will be pushed by the GOP House and Senate supermajorities that grew with the November election.
