Allen County Settles Inmate Lawsuit

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The County Council approved a nearly $638,000 payment Thursday with with a number of people who didn't get timely court hearings while being held in the Allen County Jail.

The settlement stems from a lawsuit filed in 2010 by almost 1000 inmates who had to wait longer than 48 hours for court dates after their initial arrests.

Depending on length of over-detainment, the former prisoners will be awarded payments ranging from $200 to $1,000, and officials say the county can pay the settlement without tapping into its Rainy Day Fund.
