INDIANAPOLIS (WOWO): Indiana National Guard Maj. General Martin Umbarger says the upcoming sequester cuts will take a toll on military soldiers and airmen. Umbarger says the 20-percent pay cut and reduction in flight hours won‘t impact security.

However, he says the daily uncertainty about what will happen come June will undoubtedly impact about one-thousand military techs. Umbarger says they remain hopeful that Congress will pass a budget and also address the deficit, but he‘s assuming the furloughs are definitely coming.

Meantime, Congresswoman Susan Brooks says the military furloughs have been shortened from 22 weeks to 13 weeks. Brooks says they‘re working on ways to prevent more military cuts should the issue arise. Brooks says the sequesters wasn‘t intended to happen.

She says she remains hopeful that the House and Senate can figure out how to move forward and keep the military strong even in the face of the sequester. Brooks and Umbarger spoke at the “Roundtable With Military Commanders” at the Indiana National Guard Armory Wednesday.
