Fire at Major Coke Plant in NW Indiana

BURNS HARBOR, Ind. (AP) _ Dozens of firefighters have responded to a two-alarm fire at a major coke plant near Lake Michigan.

It wasn't immediately clear how large the fire at ArcelorMittal in Burns Harbor was or whether anyone was injured. Porter, Chesterton, and Burns Harbor sent firefighters to assist the company fire department.

Porter Fire Department chief Lewis Craig Sr. tells The (Munster) Times that the fire department at ArcelorMittal's Burns Harbor plant called for assistance shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday and sent out a second alarm shortly thereafter.

Emergency officials in the city about 30 miles southeast of Chicago had no immediate information when contacted by The Associated Press.

The coke plant supplies the sprawling ArcelorMittal steel mill, among the largest in the U.S.
