Indianapolis Adds Crosswalk Where 1st-Grader Struck, Killed

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): The city of Indianapolis is putting in a crosswalk outside an elementary school where a first-grader was struck and killed by a car last week.

Dar Wee was hit by a car on a busy street near Nora Elementary School on the city's north side April 15. He later died from his injuries.

The director of the city's Department of Public Works issued an emergency order to add stop signs and a crosswalk on the street where the boy was hit. Installation of the crosswalk was expected to be completed by Wednesday afternoon.

The process to approve a crosswalk can take months, and department spokesman Scott Manning says it was sped up because of immediate safety concerns.
