New US 31 Route Near South Bend Opening this Week

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – State highway officials say the new stretch of U.S. 31 between South Bend and Plymouth in northern Indiana will open to traffic this week.

The Indiana Department of Transportation says drivers will be able to start using the 20-mile section of divided, four-lane highway on Thursday. Some lane restrictions will remain near the northern end of the new highway near the U.S. 20 bypass in South Bend and its interchange with U.S. 30 near Plymouth.

The $221 million project includes three new interchanges and one that remains under construction.

It's part of a reconstruction project for U.S. 31 linking Indianapolis and South Bend. Other major parts include the new bypass around Kokomo and highway upgrades in the northern suburbs of Indianapolis.
