INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Central Indiana communities are exhausting their snow-plowing budgets and salt supplies with nearly two months to go in winter.

Indianapolis has spent nearly all its $7.3 million annual snow budget, and Avon is over budget. Other communities have gone through their normal salt allotment for the season and might have to move money around to purchase more.

Indianapolis Public Works Director Lori Miser tells The Indianapolis Star the tight budget won't affect snow removal.

The city has drawn criticism over its handling of a Jan. 5 storm that dropped more than 11 inches of snow. A deep freeze that followed left streets rutted with ice and packed-down snow. Most schools closed for a week.

Mayor Greg Ballard is seeking at least $3.4 million in federal reimbursements.
