State Seeks to Prevent Falls by Older Ohioans

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP): A state initiative to prevent falls by older Ohioans is aiming to warn shoppers of all ages what to look for and how to avoid falling hazards amid holiday shopping.

The Steady U Ohio initiative led by Gov. John Kasich and the Ohio Department of Aging urges older Ohioans to shop at off-peak times to avoid crowds and long waits. They also encourage shoppers to report hazards including spills and loose rugs to store staff.

Ohioans using canes or walkers should always shop with them or take advantage of scooters provided at some stores.

Retailers should create falls prevention policies and make sure employees know them. They also should identify any problems with flooring or other areas that could cause accidents.
