8-year-old boy killed crossing Warsaw street

WARSAW, Ind. (AP) – Police in northern Indiana say an 8-year-old boy was fatally struck by a car while crossing a street near an elementary school.

The Warsaw Police Department says the boy who was hit about 1:45 p.m. Monday was attending summer school. The boy was being taken to a Fort Wayne hospital but the ambulance diverted to a Columbia City hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the boy was in the crosswalk when he was hit by the car close to Harrison Elementary School in the city about 40 miles northwest of Fort Wayne. The crash involving a 24-year-old driver remained under investigation.

*UPDATE at 10:58am* The 8-year-old has been identified as Gidieon Cook. He recently finished the second grade at Harrison Elementary School. The driver has cooperated in the investigation by providing a blood draw as well as a consensual search of her cell phone.  Investigators are awaiting results of the forensic cell phone download and the toxicology report.
