FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) — A Fort Wayne man is in custody following an hours-long barricade situation that began Wednesday evening and ended after officers deployed tear gas to bring the standoff to a close.

The Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) says officers were called around 8:00 p.m. on October 9 to a reported dispute between neighbors in the 2200 block of Broadmoor Avenue, located on the city’s northeast side.

When officers arrived at the scene, they identified a suspect believed to be involved in the dispute. That individual left the area in a vehicle before officers could make contact. Police say they attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver refused to pull over, leading officers on a short pursuit through the neighborhood.

According to FWPD, the driver then returned to the Broadmoor Avenue home and ran inside, refusing to exit and barricading himself inside the residence.

Due to previous interactions with the individual — including what police described as threats made in the past — the department activated several specialized units. The Emergency Services Team, Crisis Response Team, and Air Support Unit were dispatched to the scene around 9:50 p.m., and officers began efforts to de-escalate the situation.

Over the next several hours, police say they made numerous attempts to contact the barricaded man by phone and loudspeaker, urging him to surrender peacefully. All efforts were refused.

Just before 1:00 a.m. on Thursday, officers deployed tear gas into the residence. Shortly after, the suspect exited the home and was taken into custody without further incident.

Police have not released the man’s name or any charges he may face at this time. No injuries were reported, and officials say the incident remains under investigation.
