Red Cross Urges Holiday Blood Donations as Supplies Tighten

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WOWO)— The American Red Cross is urging Hoosiers to donate blood or platelets as the agency works to maintain a stable supply during what is typically one of the busiest and most challenging times of the year.

With December marking National Month of Giving, Red Cross officials say donations are crucial as hospitals navigate increased emergency needs and holiday-related staffing slowdowns. Blood types O positive, O negative, and B negative are in particularly high demand.

“Blood on the shelves is what makes the difference when the unexpected happens,” the organization said in its appeal, encouraging families to make blood donation part of their holiday traditions.

Donors can schedule appointments through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, at RedCrossBlood.org, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS.

To boost donations, the Red Cross is offering two holiday incentives:
Dec. 8–18: Donors receive a $15 Amazon Gift Card by email.
Dec. 19–Jan. 4: Donors receive an exclusive Red Cross long-sleeve T-shirt, while supplies last.

Those unable to donate blood are encouraged to support the organization through financial contributions at redcross.org.
