Unexpected Deposit: Man Arrested After Meth Found in Drive-Thru Tube

Drive in bankking signage

WOODSFIELD, Oh. (WOWO)  — A Monroe County man was arrested after deputies say he accidentally sent methamphetamine through a bank’s drive-thru air tube system.

According to the sheriff’s office, 46-year-old Jason Smith unknowingly placed a baggie containing meth into the pneumatic tube during a transaction on December 3. Bank staff alerted authorities, and officers with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources assisted deputies in locating Smith after he left the bank.

When investigators stopped him, they reported finding additional suspected drugs and drug-related items inside his truck. Smith was taken into custody and transported to the Monroe County Jail according to WTVG.

Sheriff Derek Norman used the incident to remind the public that illegal drugs can be safely surrendered. “Illegal drugs don’t belong in bank drive-thrus — but they can be turned in at the Sheriff’s Office,” Norman said. “No charges, no handcuffs, just help. We’d much rather safely take them off the street than see another unexpected ‘deposit.’”

The case remains under investigation.
