MUNCIE, Ind. (AP): Muncie schools are joining a growing number of districts considering ending bus service due to funding shortages caused by statewide property tax caps.

Muncie Community Schools Corp. is asking voters Tuesday to approve a property tax increase that would provide $3.3 million to operate buses. The district will likely end bus service next year if voters reject the measure.

Schools in South Bend, Elkhart and elsewhere are considering similar steps as they face losing up to 60 percent of their transportation funds.

Indiana doesn't require districts to provide transportation for students but makes it illegal for districts to charge children to ride school buses.

Purdue University professor Larry DeBoer says the tax caps hit urban districts especially hard because they have to share tax revenue with city services.
