INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Some Indiana State Board of Education officials say teacher evaluation results that show only 2 percent of educators need improvement are unfair to students and parents.
Members of the board criticized the new evaluations during a Wednesday meeting, saying the system failed to paint an accurate picture of teachers and school administrators in Indiana.
Last year was the first year the evaluations were used in Indiana. Almost 88 percent of teachers were rated effective or highly effective.
Legislation passed in 2011 mandated each district conduct an annual review for all teachers and administrators, although districts could choose how to evaluate them. Only those rated effective or highly effective are eligible for salary increases.
Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz said tying teacher compensation to the scores might have skewed results.
